FAMOUS JAZZ SAXOPHONISTS
The saxophone has played a defining role in the history of jazz. Sidney Bechet is often regarded as the first great jazz soloist, pioneering the expressive sound of the instrument. Soon after, Coleman Hawkins emerged as the first great tenor saxophonist, shaping the role of the saxophone in jazz ensembles. Beginning his professional career in 1920, Hawkins went on to become the original lead tenor in the legendary Fletcher Henderson Orchestra in 1924 — setting the standard for generations of saxophonists to follow.
